Born in Sui-no-Sato to loving parents, she had no idea what the world above the sea was like. Her father would take her up to see the stars at night, but only when it’s clear out.This fascination with the stars also empowered her to want to know the world beyond the sea.Despite this, she understands the reasons why her family and people have chosen a peaceful life under the sea, according to stories given by the Kojin.

News from Kojin came out that Doma was under the garlean empire’s occupation. Shiina was 12 years old when they learned of this and so, she was forbidden to watch the stars in clear skies in fear that the garleans would figure out their peaceful settlement.When she turned 22, 10 years under the occupation of the garlean empire in Doma, she decided to take a risk. She misses the stars deeply and wishes to see them once more. So, she readied herself to embark on an adventure to learn sharlayan astrology, and made sure that her family was safe before packing up. She, however, was caught by her father who reprimanded her at first but ultimately let her go, knowing that he couldn’t separate her from the stars.She had her eyes set on Sharlayan due to hearing stories about Astrologians and the study of stars from her Kojin friends. With the help of these friends and her studious mindset, she successfully sailed to Eorzea.Upon her arrival to Coerthas, she was met with distaste by Ishgardians. It seems that years ago, Au Ri were thought to be connected to Draconian roots and so slaughtered many of her kind.She did reach Dravania at one point, but was soon to find out that the Sharlayan camp was empty.

This made her distraught and went back to Ishgard where she met a young Jannequinard, who promised to teach her what he knows and took her into ‘study’ at the Athenaeum Astrologicum.This was an understatement because she ended up self-studying using references given by Jannequinard and on the side, would start working under the chief Astrologian to earn some extra cash.During this, she lived in the outskirts of Coerthas, just between Camp Dragonhead and Northern Gridania, in hopes to lessen the gossiping she hears about her race.
Eventually, she was given a closer home located at the Foundation when Ishgard decided to leave the Eorzean Alliance, isolating them from the rest of Eorzea.

She became friends with many knights & lords patrolling in that area. She met a young Artoriel who she bonded over with songwriting and to an extent, a young Haurchefant who quickly became a younger brother to her as she watched him grow into the Knight Commander of Camp Dragonhead.She also has met a Estinien and Aymeric who were around 22 around this time as well. The two promising knights saved her from wyverns that terrorised her on her way back from stargazing at the Coerthas Central Highlands.When she turned 30, she witnessed Aymeric’s ceremony in becoming the Lord Commander at the age of 25.The young lord commander, after his own ceremony, confessed his feelings for Shiina, whom she rejected at the time, telling him to focus on his new role as the lord commander.Despite this, Aymeric would still visit her at the Athenaeum Astrologicum and pass it off as patrolling at the time.When Shiina was 32, the Calamity struck all of Eorzea. Some areas not as affected as others but Ishgard was enveloped into a white sheet of a forever winter.During this time, Shiina saw less and less of her friends as they all became busy trying to manage this cold. The supplies and food dwindled and they had to prioritize trading, changing the whole economy of the nation.

Around this time as well, Shiina would be rarely seen outside as she couldn’t handle the cold very well. She stopped working as well for a few months to condition herself into the cold.She was also sent monetary support and food supplies from the Borel House, whom she politely denied the monetary support. She would sneak a glance at his office window, her window perfectly situated near the Congregation of Our Knights Most Heavenly and would wave hello to him when caught. It was these unspoken interactions that made her slowly fall in love with him.She returned to work at the age of 36, 4 years after the calamity. Forcing herself out to adapt her body to the new temperatures and because her money has dwindled from the past few years.She was offered a new job instead at Camp Dragonhead under the Knight Commander Haurchefant, her friend, as he grew concerned about her pale face and her sluggish actions when passing by her. Her new job at Camp Dragonhead was mostly a healer as she used sharlayan astrology and as one of the messengers at the Observatorium.

It was due to her job that she met I’liani Vheo and Beah Magoa., Warriors of Light in search of an airship that supposedly crashed in Coerthas. She secretly helped them after the chief astrologian denied them assistance.It was during the direct assault of the city proper that Aymeric gets to speak to her once again.In the middle of it all, Shiina joins forces with the Warriors of Light and other dragoons as they fight back with Lucia to protect the Steps of Faith.Shortly after, Aymeric asks to talk to Shiina, giving her his personal compliments and expresses his interest in being with her. Despite her mutual growing feelings and interests, she tells him that they can’t be more than what they are due to the increasingly alarming height of the dragonsong war around them.This is also where Aymeric vows to her that once the dragonsong war is over and done with, he will properly ask for her hand. Shiina accepts this vow and would soon find more extravagant gifts on her doorstep on different days.
